Sequoias men's basketball moves to 4-0 with sweep of Antelope Valley
Ryan Johnson's big weekend helped fuel another College of the Sequoias men's basketball sweep.
The sophomore out of Hanford High combined for 42 points and 18 points as Giants beat Antelope Valley 82-69 on March 13, and 79-71 on March 12 to wrap up the second of a five-week season delayed roughly four months because of safety precautions related to the coronavirus pandemic.
Johnson, a former San Jose State quarterback now working to land a scholarship to a four-year college in basketball, delivered 16 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, three steals and two blocks in Sequoias' win on March 13 in Lancaster.
The Giants (4-0) rolled out to a 45-29 first-half lead to take control.
Seth Dawson (Antioch) had 15 points, six rebounds, six assists and a steal; Tiveon Stroud (Selma) contributed 13 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals; and Mohammed Adam (Marina) added 10 points, two rebounds and two assists for Sequoias.
The Giants also received seven points, three rebounds, an assist, two steals and a block from Ryan Troutman (Kerman); seven points, three rebounds and two assists from Scott Ator (Murphy, Texas); seven points from Amil Fields (Hayward) and three points and four assists from Conner Jackson (Dublin).
A day earlier, Sequoias held off a late Antelope Valley rally behind Johnson's 26 points, seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks.
The Giants built a 20-point lead (71-51) with 4:58 left in the fourth quarter on a three-point play by Dawson, but the Marauders (1-3) closed the game on a 20-8 run to make it close.
Sequoias led 34-31 at halftime.
Dawson finished with 11 points, two rebounds, five assists and three steals, while Jackson had 10 points, two rebounds and two assists.
Troutman and Ator each had eight points and seven rebounds; Fields had seven points and two rebounds; Stroud had five points and five rebounds; Tyler Harris (Scotts Valley) had four points, five rebounds and a block; and Adam had three assists and two steals for the Giants.
Sequoias' season continues March 19-20 against Allan Hancock (1-2).
The Giants travel to Santa Maria to face the Bulldogs at 5:30 p.m. on March 19, and return to Porter Field House for the rematch at 5:30 p.m. March 20.
