COS Swimming & Diving Excels at Cuesta Meets

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The College of the Sequoias swim and dive teams turned in impressive performances at the Cuesta Sprint Meet (March 6) and the 47th Annual Cuesta Sprint Invitational (March 7-8). Competing against a strong field of teams, COS secured multiple event wins, podium finishes, and standout relay performances, continuing their momentum as they approach the final stretch of the season. 

Head Coach Allyson Briano praised her team's performance, saying, "We had a fantastic showing at both meets. Our athletes showcased their talent in both the individual and relay events, and it's amazing to see all their hard work pay off." 

Cuesta Sprint Meet (March 6, 2025) 

Women's Highlights 

The COS women started the meet with a third-place finish in the 200 Medley Relay (2:03.42), with the team of Sierra Hodson (Tulare Western HS), Kallysta Cox (Strathmore HS), Azulema Ayon (Exeter HS), and Kenzie Hyder (Porterville HS) leading the charge. 

In the 50 Free, Ayon secured a sixth-place finish (26.08), while Hyder placed eighth in prelims (26.83). Ayon also performed well in the 50 Fly, taking third (28.35). 

For breaststroke, Ayon placed third in the 50 Breast (34.91), with Savannah Gates (Hartland Charter) right behind in fourth (34.95). 

Hyder had a strong showing in the 100 IM, finishing sixth (1:07.87). 

The 200 Free Relay team of Hyder, Hodson, Lauren Pelayo (El Diamante HS), and Ayon secured second place (1:49.39). 

In diving, Reannon Herrera (Redwood HS) placed sixth in the 1-meter event (65.50), while in the 3-meter event, she placed fourth (78.20). 

Men's Highlights

The COS men's 200 Medley Relay A team of Vincente Sanchez (Golden West HS), Josh Mitchell (Redwood HS), Trent Regier (Kingsburg HS), and Brendan Meyer (Lemoore HS) placed fifth (1:42.58). 

Meyer delivered a top-10 performance in the 50 Free, finishing seventh (22.48). Regier also performed in the 100 IM, finishing seventh (1:00.39). 

In the 50 Breast, Mitchell led the way for the Giants, placing 16th (30.69). 

The 200 Free Relay team of Jack LoBue (Monache HS), Quinn Rea (Mt. Whitney HS), Regier, and Meyer finished seventh (1:34.56). 

COS divers dominated the boards, with Guy Woodard (Golden West HS) winning the 1-meter event (98.35), while Jackson Coon (Redwood HS) placed second (74.30). In the 3-meter event, Coon won with a score of 102.90, and Woodard took second (96.90).

Women's Highlights

The COS women won three relay events. The 200 Free Relay team of Ayon, Hodson, Pelayo, and Hyder won the event in 1:49.88, while the 400 Free Relay team claimed first in 4:06.06 and the 400 Medley Relay team took first in 4:41.35. 

Hyder performed well in the 1650 Free, finishing seventh (20:25.43), while Ayon placed second in the 50 Free (25.80). 

In the 50 Fly, Ayon placed seventh (28.59), while in the 100 Free, she finished tenth (56.94). She shattered the 100 Fly school record, placing fourth with an impressive time of 1:03.25.

In the 100 Breast, Gates earned a fourth-place finish (1:16.26), with Cox placing 13th (1:19.97). 

Herrera continued her strong diving performance, placing second in the 3-meter event (198.80) and sixth in the 1-meter (177.95). 

Men's Highlights 

The COS men showcased dominance in the relays, winning three events. The 200 Free Relay team of LoBue, Rea, Regier, and Meyer won in 1:30.89, while the 400 Free Relay team finished first in 3:34.16, and the 400 Medley Relay squad won in 3:56.96. 

Rea had a strong swim in the 200 Back, placing eighth (2:10.19), while in the 100 Free, Meyer finished 11th (50.03). 

Regier placed fifth in the 50 Fly (24.33), while Rea finished ninth in the 200 IM (2:11.74). 

In the 100 Breast, Mitchell finished 12th (1:07.46). 

The COS men's divers continued their success, with Coon placing second in the 1-meter event (204.50), Woodard finishing third (190.05), and Henshaw fifth (162.00). In the 3-meter event, Woodard finished third (206.00), Coon fourth (205.85), and Henshaw fifth (202.70). 

Upcoming Meets 

The Giants will be back in action on Friday, March 21, as they host the COS Meet, which will also serve as Sophomore Day, it will begin at 4:00 p.m.

Following their home meet, COS will travel to Las Positas College for the Hawk Invite, a two-day competition from Friday, March 28, to Saturday, March 29. Events will begin at 12:00 p.m. on Friday and continue Saturday at 9:00 a.m. as the Giants continue their push toward the conference championships and postseason competition.
