State No. 1 Giants with 65-46 Win over Moorpark for 14th straight win

MOORPARK, CA — The No. 1 state-ranked College of the Sequoias women's basketball team extended their unbeaten streak to 14 games with a 65-46 victory over No. 5 Moorpark at Raider Pavilion on Thursday night. COS used a balanced attack and stifling defense to overcome the Raiders, who fell to 7-4 on the season. 

Campbell Vieg (Chico HS) led the Giants with 14 points, adding three assists and six made free throws. Jocelyn Medina (Pierce HS) chipped in 13 points, hitting 3-of-5 from the three-point line, while Lucia Ricci (Seattle, WA) chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds. COS controlled the game on both ends, holding Moorpark to 28.1% shooting from the floor and just 5.3% from three-point range. 

Head Coach Tyler Newton said, "Moorpark is a talented team, and we had to play disciplined basketball to come out with the victory. I'm proud of how we executed and maintained our composure." 

The game began with both teams trading baskets, but COS pulled ahead to a 16-10 lead after the first quarter thanks to Vieg's ability to attack the paint and Medina's perimeter shooting. Moorpark's Mikayla Oliver kept the Raiders within striking distance early, scoring six of her game-high 14 points in the opening frame. 

The Giants broke the game open in the second quarter with an 18-14 run, extending their lead to 34-24 at halftime. Medina hit two of her three triples during the quarter, and Ricci grabbed six rebounds before the break. 

In the third quarter, COS held Moorpark to 12 points while adding 13 of their own, maintaining a double-digit lead. The Raiders made a brief push midway through the period, but a key sequence from Kaitlin Giacone (Eureka HS), who scored seven points and grabbed six rebounds, kept the Giants in control. 

COS finished strong in the fourth quarter, outscoring Moorpark 18-10. Mallary Gonzalez (Hoover HS) provided a spark off the bench with six points, hitting all three of her field goal attempts. Moorpark struggled from deep, missing key opportunities to close the gap, as COS secured another dominant win.
