No. 1 Giants Shine in Win Over Merced, Improve to 21-0 Ahead of Home Matchup

MERCED, Calif. - The No. 1 state-ranked College of the Sequoias women's basketball team continued their play with a commanding 93-44 victory over Merced College on Wednesday night. The Giants improved to 21-0 (5-0) with a balanced offense and smothering defense that held Merced to just 24.6% shooting from the field. 

Morgan Trigueiro (Caruthers HS) led the way with a game-high 30 points, shooting 12-of-21 from the field and connecting on four 3-pointers. Jocelyn Medina (Pierce HS) delivered another strong performance, posting a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds, while also adding five assists and seven steals. Campbell Vieg (Chico HS) added 12 points, four rebounds, and five assists, while Kaitlin Giacone (Eureka HS) and Olivia Gill (Pioneer HS) added 10 points apiece to round out the double-digit scorers. 

The Giants wasted no time establishing their play, outscoring Merced 25-12 in the first quarter and building a 46-21 lead at halftime. COS kept their foot on the gas in the third quarter, putting up 27 points and holding Merced to just 9. Their defense was relentless throughout the game, forcing 15 turnovers and converting them into easy fast-break opportunities.

Upcoming Game: 

The Giants return to Porter Field House this Saturday, January 25, for a 3:00 p.m. matchup against Porterville College. The Men's will play after, at 5:00 p.m. COS will look to extend their record as they continue their pursuit of a conference championship and deep playoff run and continue to solidify their standing atop the state rankings. Come out and support the team as they defend their No. 1 ranking on their home court.
