Giants Come Up Clutch in 5-4 Victory Over Fresno City

FRESNO, Calif. – The College of the Sequoias women's tennis team secured a hard-fought 5-4 victory over Fresno City on March 1, claiming key doubles wins and closing out crucial singles matches to earn the road win. 

Doubles Play Sets the Tone 

The Giants set themselves up for success by taking two of three doubles matches. The No. 1 duo of Ruby Zambrano (Dinuba HS) and Jaden Godoy (Dinuba HS) battled but fell 8-4. However, Summer Herrera (Mt. Whitney HS) and Mia Orosco (Dinuba HS) responded with an 8-4 victory at No. 2, using smart court positioning and teamwork to even the score. At No. 3, Hannah Salazar (Tulare Western HS) and Sadie Avila (Hanford HS) dominated with an 8-2 win, giving COS the edge heading into singles play. 

Singles Play Seals the Victory 

With the match coming down to singles, the Giants stepped up under pressure. Herrera continued her stellar play at No. 1, securing a 6-4, 6-1 win. Salazar put together an identical 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 5, while Orosco delivered a strong performance at No. 6, winning 6-1, 6-4. 

Despite a few hard-fought losses, including Godoy's three-set battle at No. 3 and Avila's close match at No. 4, the Giants had done enough to clinch the team win. 

From the Baseline 

Head coach Martin Herrera praised the team's resilience, stating, "This was a great team effort from start to finish. Our doubles teams set the tone early, and we had players step up in key moments in singles. The way we competed and supported each other today was impressive." 

Looking Ahead 

The Giants will aim to continue play as they continue Central Valley Conference action on Friday, March 7 at Reedley College at 1:00 p.m..
