Giants fall to Modesto on Homecoming

The College of the Sequoias football team struggled to find any momentum in Saturday's 35-7 defeat to Modesto at the Mineral King Bowl.

COS held the Pirates scoreless in the first quarter and a majority of the second in the Valley Conference opener for both schools.

Modesto running back Devan Bass opened the scoring with 1:58 remaining in the first half with a 1-yard rushing touchdown.

Bass scored two more times in the third quarter on a 12-yard scamper and a 1-yard rush. He finished the night with 187-yards on 25 carries.

The Pirates extended their lead to 28-0 in the fourth quarter as quarterback Dan Velasquez punched in a 7-yard rush.

Modesto finished the game with 355 total yards, with 310 yards coming by way of the running game. MJC rushed for 310 on 50 carries and averaged 6.2-yards per rush.

With less than thirty seconds left in the game, COS quarterback Gus Villareal ended Modesto's shutout. Villareal scored the lone Giant touchdown on a 9-yard rush.

On the ensuing kickoff, Modesto's Jeff Hines capped off the game by returning Sequoias' attempted onside kick 52-yards for a touchdown.

With the loss, COS drops to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the Valley Conference. The Giants have lost 18 conference games in a row, and 24 of their last 25 dating back to 2012. The last conference win for COS was in 2013 over San Joaquin Delta.

Giants defensive lineman Justin Wright had a team-high two tackles for loss, in addition to one sack. Jailyn May led COS with 7 total tackles, and Frank Ngalamulume had the lone interception for Sequoias.

Next up for the Giants is a Friday night road matchup against Laney. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Bay Area.
