Giants defeat Diablo Valley in dramatic fashion
The College of the Sequoias football team held onto a narrow 40-35 victory over Diablo Valley on Saturday night at the Mineral King Bowl.
It looked as if Sequoias would coast to victory after going into halftime with a 27-7 lead.
The Vikings and quarterback Matt Vitale engineered a 14 point third quarter, cutting the Giants' lead to just six.
COS needed the connection between quarterback Nolan LeForge and wide receiver Phillip Adams to be strong the entire night.
The duo hooked up for a combined three touchdowns, with the most important score coming with 2:54 left in the fourth quarter. LeForge connected with Adams on a 52-yard go-ahead touchdown, giving Sequoias a 40-35 lead.
Diablo Valley drove down to Sequoias 13-yard line with less than a minute remaining. The Vikings had four plays to win the game, but with their backs against their own goal line, the Giants defense held strong to force a turnover on downs.
LeForge finished 17-of-28, with 312 yards, and four touchdowns. Adams broke out for 240 yards and three touchdowns, on six catches. COS running back Andrew Azua for 71-yards on 18 carries.
On the other side of the ball for the Giants, Jailyn Mays and Preveon Alexander finished tied with a team-high five tackles. Frank Ngalamulume and Ricky Scott each caught an interception on the night.
The trio of Noah Wright, Justin Wright, and Ian Tyler each recorded a sack for COS.
Next up for the Giants is a road trip to Rocklin to play Sierra College. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in Northern California.
