Retired Numbers (Roy Taylor 1 BIO and Bert Holt 6 BIO)
Uniform numbers 1 and 6 have been retired in recognition of the significant contributions to COS community college baseball by former Giant coaches Roy Taylor and Bert Holt both members of the California Community College Baseball Association's Hall of Fame.
After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, Roy Taylor earned his degree at Fresno State where he played baseball, basketball and football. His first two years of his teaching career were in Kerman and then he moved his family to Visalia in 1950, where he taught and coached at the College of the Sequoias. He coached football for 15 years, baseball from 1951 to 1967, basketball for five years and golf from 1970 to 1989. Taylor was player/coach during the summers for the Western Canadian League in the 1950’s and early 1960’s. He has been inducted into the California Community College Baseball Hall of Fame and the COS Hall of Fame. Roy Taylor passed away on December 1, 2011.
Holt, who wore uniform number 6, joined the COS staff in 1965 as an assistant football and baseball coach, and he became head baseball coach in 1968. During his 21 -year career as head coach, Holt's team won 423 games and four conference championships. His 1970 team won the Northern California Championship and was runner-up to Cerritos for the state title. He has been inducted into the California Community College Baseball Hall of Fame and the COS Hall of Fame. Coach Bert Holt passed away on December 4, 2015.
