COS overcomes Siskiyous on the road
The COS football team overcame College of the Siskiyous in a game that saw seven lead changes, and a variety of big plays on both sides, to come out victorious on the road 36-29. "It was a dog fight" said COS head football coach Irv Pankey, "I am proud of our team's effort and their will to stick with it even when we got down."
COS lost the lead 23-29 with 14:29 to go in the game after Everett Deveaux of Siskiyous returned a punt 67 yards for a touchdown. But the Giants would respond with a 14 play 75 yard drive that took four minutes and thirty three seconds off the clock to take back the lead for the last time 30-29. Freshmen running back Devon Calhoun ran in a one yard touchdown, followed by the extra point, to give the Giants the one point lead. "The game was far from over at that point" said Pankey, "our defense did a great job the whole game but really came through for us when we needed them in the fourth."
After sophomore running back Aeron McNeal ran in a 34 yard touchdown for the Giants to make it 36-29, the COS defense was called on one more time with 4:54 to go in the game. Siskiyous took over from their own 13 yard line and drove down the field over the next 4:23 seconds before eventually being stopped at the COS nine yard line with 31 seconds to play on a fourth down and two yards to go. "It was a huge play. Our defensive line met their running back in the backfield and made the play we needed to seal the game. Couldn't have been prouder of our team to fight the way we did for the entire game" said Pankey.
COS now plays in their annual homecoming game against DeAnza College in Visalia next Saturday September 26th. Tailgating festivities for the community begin at 2pm and kickoff is slated for 5pm.
