COS Shows Well at Bakersfield
Sequoias Track and Field had their first meet of the season as they competed at the Bakersfield Invitational on February 12.
On the men's side, COS came out of the blocks with both relay teams coming out on top. In the 4 x 400m relay, Sequoias flew by the competition in the first heat with the team of James, Lewis, Cobbs, and Bramwell winning with a time of 3:15.99. The Giants beat Diablo Valley by nine seconds and Cuesta by 10.
COS 4 x 100m relay team edged out Glendale for first place by two seconds with a time of 41.65.
Freshman Bryce Huggins won the long jump at 6.91 m and Javari Fairclough got second in high jump with 1.93 m.
Sequoias also had a pair of sophomores place 1-2 in the 200m dash. Holland Cabara received first place and first place overall in the fifth heat at 21.91 seconds. In heat one Theon Lewis finished with a time of 21.93 to win the heat but was second overall.
For the women, it was the KiAna Cunningham show. Cunningham won the 100m dash at 12.61 and she went on to place first at the long jump just edging out Danielle Colvin of Ventura with 4.95. The star freshman also got sixth in the shotput throwing 9.90 m.
In the 200m dash, Meleni Rodney barely missed the top spot as she finished .76 of a second behind the leader for second place with a time of 24.80.
The Giants performed well in the field events led by Vanessa Wong who threw for first in the Javelin Throw with a distance of 30.18m. In the triple jump Kanisha Tucker came in first as well at 9.40m.
Sequoias next meet is the NorCal Preview in Hayward on Feb. 27 as well as the Warrior Open the same day in Turlock.
