Gilcrest Day 1 Results: COS Wins
COS was able to hold off the visiting Antelope Valley College Mauraders 50-45. Allie Tobie paced the Giants with 13 points and 9 rebounds. Alijah Turner also had a stellar game with 12 points and 7 rebounds including 4 three point baskets. "We played just well enough to win" said COS head coach Ray Alvarado, "we need to play better and take care of the ball if we are going to beat Sierra College tomorrow night." COS improved to 6-3 with tonights win.
Here are the capsules of the first day of the tournament:
Game 1: Ventura 86 Porterville 31: Aubri Smith led Ventura (6-1) in scoring with 15 points. Makenna Murray tallied 14 points and 8 rebounds as Ventura led 45 to 17 at halftime. Porterville College (2-4) was led by Maria Lopez with 9 points. Ventura will face Santa Rosa in the second round and Porterville will face Riverside in the consolation bracket.
Game 2: Mt. San Antonio College 73 Reedley College 33: Mt. SAC (8-0) went out to a 37 to 15 halftime lead and never trailed. Caira Benon led Mt. SAC with 17 points 5 rebounds including 12 points in the third quarter. Cherokee Cardriche led Reedley (3-2) with 7 points. Mt. SAC will face Cerritos College in the second round tomorrow while Reedley will face Solano.
Game 3: Santa Rosa 66 Riverside 55: Santa Rosa (3-1) was paced by Kerianne Noonen with 18 points. Riverside (6-2) was led by Britney Gonzales with 18 points as well. Santa Rosa will now face Ventura College while Riverside will face Reedley College.
Game 4: Cerritos 75 Solano 37: Cerritos (6-2) led 46-17 at halftime and was led by Allyson O'Brien and Kennedi Cooper with 11 points apiece. Kyara Reed tallied 8 points to lead Solano (0-4). Cerritos will now face Mt. SAC in the second round while Solano will now face Reedley College in the consolation bracket.
Game 5: Pasadena 58 Sacramento 54: Pasadena (6-2) was able to score 24 points off of turnovers to edge out Sacramento City College (3-2). Pasadena received 19 point from Judith Espinoza in the win. Sacramento was led by Jessica Lauderdale with 17 points.
Game 6: COS 50 Antelope Valley College 45: COS overcame a late four point deficit to beat Antelope Valley College in the first round of the Tom Gilcrest Invitational. Allie Tobie scored 13 points and Alijah Turner hit four 3-pointers and finished with 12 points. Shantanel Bivens scored 15 points to lead Antelope Valley.
Game 7: San Joaquin Delta 68 LA Valley 54: Tiara Tucker scored 21 points to lead Delta (6-1) over LA Valley (1-2). Adaira Obi scored 20 for LA Valley who will play play Sacramento City College tomorrow in the consolation bracket. Delta will now play Pasadena in the second round.
Game 8: Sierra 77 Glendale 42: Sierra College pulled away from Glendale to advance to the 8pm game against COS tomorrow night. Destinee Bowie finished with 18 points to lead the Wolverines. Katia Dabbaghian led Glendale with 9 points. Glendale will now face Antelope Valley College in the consolation bracket.
