Bio
Tyler Newton was named the new Head Women’s Basketball Coach of the College of the Sequoias women’s basketball team in Spring of 2024. Newton takes the reins of the Giants program following an impressive tenure at Butte, where he established them as a state power; His teams consistently ranked among the best in California. Newton will also serve as a full-time instructor in the Physical Education department.
In his seven seasons at Butte, Newton compiled a remarkable 119-52 overall record, including a 104-20 mark over the last four years. Under his leadership, Butte claimed four consecutive Golden Valley Conference (GVC) titles and made deep postseason runs, including a state semifinal appearance in 2024 and a runner-up finish in 2023. His efforts earned him Northern California Coach of the Year honors twice and Golden Valley Conference Coach of the Year four times.
Newton’s 2023-24 season at Butte was one for the record books, as his team finished 30-2 and was ranked No. 1 in California for much of the season. Butte reached the state semifinals and had a dominant run that continued their streak of conference championships.
Before his time at Butte, Newton had already built a reputation for success. He coached at Pleasant Valley High School, in Chico, California, leading the team to two league championships and two CIF Northern Section titles with an impressive 48-9 record over two seasons. Additionally, Newton has over a decade of experience as a skills coach, helping players develop their abilities and earn collegiate scholarships.
A native of Burbank, California, Newton attended Antelope Valley College before transferring to Shasta College, where he earned all-conference and all-state honors. He was later inducted into the Shasta Athletic Hall of Fame. Newton capped his collegiate playing career at the University of the Pacific, where he helped lead the Tigers to two Big West Conference titles and a No. 14 national ranking in his senior season. After college, he played professionally for seven years in Japan, Austria, France, and Australia.
In addition to his coaching success, Newton holds a bachelor’s degree in Communications from the University of the Pacific and dual master’s degrees in Exercise Science and Athletic Administration from Concordia College.
