COS Cross Country Impressive at NorCal Championships
On Friday, November 6th the COS Giants Cross Country team stepped out onto the Toro Park cross country course in Salinas, California once more this year, this time for the Northern California Championships.
On the women's side conference champion Jojo Zorn of Monache lead the Giants by placing 6th and running an impressive 19:16 on the 3 mile course. Zorn was the second freshmen to cross the finish line. Coming in with a 11th place finish and a time of 19:50 was Freshmen Ariana Jasso of Redwood. Following Jasso was Freshmen Sarah Reid of Exeter who finished 14th in 20:04. Freshmen Kelsay McClendon of El Diamante placed 17th and finished in 20:13. Kingburg's Monica Lopez, Freshmen, finished in 26th, 20:38. Also competing for the Giants were Sophomores Adeline Blair of Golden West (29th, 20:50) and Marlene Alcantar of Monache (42nd,21:31). Each of these ladies lowered their time on the course from this season, from a respectable 16 second drop to a tremendous 2 minute improvement. Together these ladies were able to compile a team score of 68 points to capture second place to Hartnell who scored 42 points. They also punched their ticket to the State Championships.
For the men, conference champion Adam Gonzalez of Redwood had a tremendous showing as he finished the 4 mile course in 20:31 for 4th place. Gonzalez was the second freshmen to finish the race. Coming in 35th with a time of 22:15 was Freshmen Arturo Ochoa of Exeter. Following Ochoa in 38th was Freshmen Abran Ayon of McFarland, 22:18. Tyler Dalton, a Freshmen of Mt.Whitney, finished 42nd in 22:26. Freshmen Isaac Leal of Sanger came in 44th, 22:33. Freshmen Rogelio Luviano of Tulare Union (57th,23:04) and Matt Villareal of Sanger (76th,23:50) also competed for the Giants. All 5 of the top scoring men for the Giants improved on their previous course time and helped contribute to their 6th place team finish with 156 points. This performance allowed the men to join the women in their journey to the State Championships.
This coming Saturday morning, November 21st the Giants will wrap up their season by traveling to Fresno, California to compete at Woodward Park once more this season for the State Championships where they will compete against the best Northern and Southern California junior college teams.
