Men 2nd, Women 4th at NorCal Championships
Attempting to pull off a major upset and repeat as NorCal Champions, the COS Giants Men's track and field team came oh-so-close but placed second behind American River College. The American River Beavers were projected to outscore the Giants by 32 points, but after a number of truly outstanding performances on part of the COS men, the team championship came down to the last event, the 4 x 400 relay. Trailing by a mere 5 ½ points going in to the last event, the Giants Men's relay team won the relay, but the Beavers were strong enough to maintain second place in the race and win the team championship by 3 ½ points over the Giants. The final score was American River: 152, COS: 148.5. Third place was Modesto with 79 points. A total of 21 teams scored in the meet. Of the 21 men's events contested, the Giants won 9 of them, but American River managed to score more points as a result of greater depth over the broad range of events. Individual NorCal Champions for the men were: Isahia Hutchins (100, 200, LJ), Quincy Hall (400, 400 IH), Jamal Britt (110 HH), Tyler Gonzalez (800 m); the Giant men also took first in both the 4x100 and 4x400 Relays. Other outstanding performances included Jamal Britt (2nd 400 IH, 2nd LJ), David Roderick (3rd 1500 m), Joshua Outten (3rd HJ), and Deion Lightfoot (3rd 110 HH).
The Lady Giants placed fourth in the competition among a field of 23 scoring teams. Individual NorCal Champions were: Jewel Jasso (10K and 5K) and Elizabeth Sartuche (1500 m). Additional top placers were Marrisha Jacobs (2nd HJ), and Cheilin Zapata (3rd 400 IH).
