Giants add on another lopsided win
Blowout wins are becoming routine for the College of the Sequoias men's basketball team.
The Giants won by a double-digit margin for the fifth time in seven games, getting 22 points and seven rebounds from Ryan Johnson during a 97-51 throttling of Cuesta on March 26 at Porter Field House.
It was the second time Sequoias won a game by more than 45 points.
Of the seven California community college men's basketball teams playing in a season delayed and shortened because of Covid-19 pandemic safety precautions, the Giants have the state's best record at 6-1. Bakersfield, which opted out of scheduled games against Sequoias in early March, has the second-best record at 4-2.
Johnson,a returning all-state performer out of Hanford High, connected on 9 of 17 shots (including 4 of 5 3-point attempts) as the Giants shot 49.3% overall from the field (37 of 75), 40% on 3-pointers (8 of 20) and 83.3% from the free-throw line (15 of 18).
After getting off to a sluggish start against the Cougars (2-2), Sequoias went on a 26-6 run to turn a 13-9 deficit into a 35-19 cushion midway through the first half. Conner Jackson (Dublin) scored eight points and Mohammed Adam (Marina) added six points during the run.
The Giants led 50-27 at halftime and grew their advantage to as large as 47 points (95-48) on a basket by Nick Trevino (Redwood) with 1:48 remaining in the game.
Five Sequoias players scored in double figures, including Adam and Scott Ator (Murphy, Texas) with 12 apiece. Adam also had five rebounds, four assists and two steals, while Ator added seven rebounds and a block.
Jackson finished with 10 points, three rebounds, three assists and a block, and Seth Dawson (Antioch) contributed 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
The Giants also received nine points, five rebounds, two steals and an assist from Nicolas Allen (Georgia); six points, six rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal from Amil Fields (Hayward); six points, five rebounds, two assists and a block from Ryan Troutman (Kerman); four points, two rebounds and a steal from Trevino; four points, nine rebounds and two blocks from Tyler Harris (Scotts Valley); and two points and three rebounds from Ayo Aderoboye (Nigeria).
Sequoias closes its season with two games against Cerro Coso (4-3).
The Giants host the Coyotes at 5:30 p.m. March 31, and play in Ridgecrest at 5 p.m. April 1.
