College of the Sequoias' men's basketball team is on the cusp of ending a 20-year Central Valley Conference championship drought.
And it could happen as soon as Feb. 9 when the state No. 7-ranked Giants host Reedley at Porter Field House. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
With a Sequoias' win, and losses by No. 12 Columbia (against West Hills-Lemoore) and No. 27 Fresno City (against Porterville), the Giants would clinch at least a tie for their first CVC title since 2001.
Sequoias (20-4, 9-1) has a two-game lead on second-place Columbia (21-3, 7-3) and a three-game edge on third-place Fresno City (11-8, 5-3) with four to play.
The Giants can also clinch at least a championship tie with wins over Reedley (4-19, 0-9) and Columbia on Feb. 12 in a game scheduled for 3 p.m. at Porter Field House,
Sequoias put itself in position to capture the CVC title with an 86-63 road victory over 19-time reigning conference champion Fresno City on Feb. 7.
It was the seventh straight victory for the Giants, a streak that has seen them outscore opponents by an average of 26 points per game.
After Reedley and Columbia, Sequoias closes the regular season with road games at Reedley at 5 p.m. Feb. 14 and at West Hills-Lemoore (9-12, 3-7) at 5 p.m. Feb. 18.
West Hills-Lemoore will be the site of the Elite Eight state champion tournament, which is scheduled for March 11-13.
