College of the Sequoias' men's soccer team opened Central Valley Conference play Oct. 1 with a 2-0 loss at state No. 5-ranked Fresno City College.
The Rams (7-1-1, 1-0-0) scored twice in the first half -- on goals by Bryan Milan and Enrique Gutierrez -- and goalkeeper Anthony Avila saved six shot attempts by the Giants (2-5-2, 0-1-0).
Sequoias also dropped a nonconference contest at Los Angeles City 2-1 on Sept. 28.
After L.A. City (4-3-3) opened the scoring in the 60th minute, the Giants tied it up on a goal by Marques Carillo (Golden West) off an assist from Adrian Lopez (Mt. Whitney) in the 63rd minute.
Douglas Perales scored what proved to be the game-winner for L.A. City in the 70th minute.
Giants goalkeeper Zachary Ramirez (Orange Cove) made 13 saves.
Sequoias is set to resume conference play at 2 p.m. Oct. 5 when it hosts Merced (6-1-1, 1-0-0) on its campus field.
The Giants will also play this week at Clovis Community (2-7-0, 0-1-0) at 4 p.m. Oct. 8.
