#20 Giants Sweeps #10 Fresno City in Doubleheader
Visalia, CA – The No. 20 College of the Sequoias softball team (14-6, 2-1 CVC) continued Central Valley Conference play with a sweep of No. 10 Fresno City College (12-8, 1-2 CVC), taking game one 9-1 and following it up with a dramatic 1-0 walk-off victory in game two.
Game 1: Sequoias 9, Fresno City 1 (6 innings)
The Giants broke open a 1-1 tie in the third inning with four runs, fueled by a three-run double from Taylor Hastin (Tulare Union HS). COS put the game away in the sixth, scoring five more runs to enforce the run rule.
Madisyn Benedict (Hanford HS) had a standout game, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI double, while Isabella Ortega (Dinuba HS) added a two-run double in the sixth. Grace Chojnacki (Mission Oak HS) picked up the win, throwing six strong innings while allowing one unearned run and striking out four.
"Grace [Chojnacki] kept them off balance, and we were able to string together good at-bats," Janelli said. "That's the kind of offensive production we need."
Game 2: Sequoias 1, Fresno City 0
Taylor Hastin (Tulare Union HS) delivered a complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits while striking out two in a dominant pitching performance .
After six scoreless innings, the Giants finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh. Shelby Somavia (Redwood HS) led off with a single, and Emilee Santos (Corcoran HS) followed with a bunt single. After two outs, Isabella Ortega (Dinuba HS) came through in the clutch, delivering a **walk-off RBI single up the middle to score pinch-runner Rozalynn Yang-Garza (Exeter HS) .
"That was a battle, and we stayed composed," Janelli said. "Taylor [Hastin] was incredible in the circle, and Isabella [Ortega] stepped up in the biggest moment."
Upcoming Games
COS will continue Central Valley Conference play at home on Thursday, March 6, at 2:00 PM vs. Reedley College. The Giants will then host a trio of games on Saturday, March 8, beginning with COS taking on West Valley at 10:00 AM, followed by West Valley vs. College of the Canyons at 12:00 PM, and concluding with the Giants taking on College of the Canyons at 2:00 PM.
