COS coach to be inducted into Tennessee-Martin Hall of Fame
COS women's tennis coach Jay Johnson will be inducted into the University of Tennessee-Martin athletic Hall of Fame on Nov. 2 during a morning campus ceremony.
An Exeter native, Johnson was named All-Gulf South Conference in football (1972) and baseball (1973) after arriving at Tennessee-Martin following a standout career at COS.
As a defensive end for the Skyhawks football team, Johnson earned National Player of the Week honors in 1971.
As a catcher for Tennessee-Martin's baseball team, Johnson was a career .385 hitter with 15 doubles, nine home runs, 42 RBIs and 46 runs. Johnson hit a team-high .420 with seven home runs and 26 RBIs in 25 games as a junior in 1972, when the Skyhawks went 21-9 and made a second consecutive trip to the national postseason tournament.
Johnson's COS women's tennis team opens its season Jan. 28 at Canyons in Santa Clarita. The Giants first home match is scheduled for Jan. 31 against Glendale.
