
Giants women's volleyball on four-match winning streak
Make it four straight for the College of the Sequoias women's volleyball team.
Behind a combined 31 kills from Allyson Garcia, the Giants beat Cerro Coso twice over the weekend to improve to 4-2 roughly midway through a month-long season delayed and shortened because of safety precautions related to the coronavirus pandemic.
Garcia, a freshman out of Dinuba High, had 18 kills as Sequoias beat the Coyotes 3-1 on March 20 in Ridgecrest, and she contributed 13 kills as the Giants topped Cerro Coso 3-1 on March 19 at Porter Field House.
With returning all-conference selection Hazel Martinez (Mission Oak) out of the lineup March 20, Garcia stepped up across the board, also contributing 18 digs and two ace serves in the Giants' 25-15, 25-18, 21-25, 25-20 victory.
Also picking up the slack along the front line were Teagan Daugherty (Tulare Union), Jayda English (Lemoore), Abigail Billingsley (Redwood), Skylen Goulart (Mission Oak) and Kenya Pinon (Woodlake).
Daugherty had seven kills, four blocks and three digs; English had six kills, four blocks, three aces and two digs; Billingsley had six kills, four digs and a block; Goulart had two kills, two blocks and two aces; and Pinon had two kills and a block.
Gia Rozadilla (Central-Fresno) led the back row with 35 digs, three assists and an ace. Ellie Applegate (Mt. Whitney) and Claire Toomey (University Prep) also contributed from the back row with eight and three digs, respectively.
Mykia Campbell (Coalinga) fed the offense with 25 assists to go along with 13 digs, two aces and a kill.
Garcia delivered 13 kills, seven digs, two aces and an assist as Sequoias pulled out a 21-25, 26-24, 25-19, 25-16 win over Cerro Coso (2-4) on March 19.
English had 10 kills, three blocks, two aces and a dig; Martinez had eight kills, 11 digs, two blocks and two aces; Daugherty had four kills and Pinon added three kills and a dig to help power the Giants' attack.
Campbell provided 24 assists, six digs, a kill and an ace; Rozadilla had eight digs, three aces and an assist; Toomey had eight digs and three aces; and Goulart added two assists and a kill.
Sequoias returns to action March 25, hosting a doubleheader against Cuesta (3-1) at Porter Field House. Matches are scheduled to start at 4 and 6:30 p.m. Fans are not permitted because of Covid-19 safety precautions.
The Giants will close their 10-game season with a doubleheader at Taft on March 31. Matches start at 3 and 5 p.m.
