Lady Giants Dominate at Conference Championships
By taking five of the top seven places in the Central Valley Conference Championships at Woodward Park on Tuesday, October 24, the Lady Giants came away with an impressive victory. Alyssa Block once again led the way by winning the individual title over the 5 km course in a time of 18:34 on what turned out to be a warm 85 degree afternoon. But what sealed the conference title was the strong showing that had Jewel Jasso (2nd), Elizabeth Sartuche (3rd), Lidia Briseno (4th), and Victoria Cota (7th) crossing the line impressively ahead of the competition.
In the Men's race the Giants placed second as a team with Luis Gonzalez leading the way, finishing in 3rd place overall on the 4 mile course. Other Giants scoring included Adrian Solis (6th), Andrew Wood (7th), De'vyd Lawson (12th), and Oscar Ochoa (13th). The Men's team title was won by Fresno City College.
Alyssa Block received Conference Runner of the Year honors for the Central Valley Conference. The Men's honoree was sophomore Isaac Oceguera of Fresno City College.
The next competition for the Giants will be the NorCal Championships, Friday, November 2, at Toro Park in Salinas. The Lady Giants will be seeking to defend their NorCal title from last year; they are currently ranked 2nd behind the host team from Hartnell College. And both the Men's and Women's teams will be striving to secure a State Meet qualifying spot.
