Block Wins State Title
Alyssa Block (Exeter) won the individual state championship in women's community college cross country this past weekend at Woodward Park in Fresno by running a time of 17:43. The next closest finisher behind block was nearly thirty seconds behind. "She went out a little faster than we had planned" said COS head coach David Bronzan who just finished his 32nd year at COS, "she went out fast and had the lead the entire race. It was incredible."
Block ran her first mile of the race in 5:15 and had a six second lead at that point and never looked back. "I just wanted to empty the tank" said Block, "I didn't want to walk away with any regrets."
Jewel Jasso (Redwood) was the second finisher for COS and finished 21st overall out of 162 runners. Jasso finished with a lifetime best on the Woodward Park course with a time of 19:16. In fact, five out of the six finishers from COS completed the course with a lifetime best and this year's COS women's team had the 2nd best overall score COS has ever had in the state championships. "The girls ran a competitive race. I am proud of how hard they competed all year long. Finishing 6th overall out of 45 teams that competed is hard to do. The girls deserve all the credit" said Coach Bronzan.
The COS men also ran in the state finals last Saturday with De'vyd Lawson (Redwood) being the men's top finisher coming in 67th overall out of 175. The COS men finished 21st out of 42 teams.
