COS to host men's and women's basketball playoff doubleheader:
COS men's and women's basketball will be host a NorCal regional playoff doubleheader on Friday night. The COS women's team earned the #3 Northern California playoff seed while earning a share of the Central Valley Conference title this past Saturday. COS women's basketball will play San Jose City College at 5:30pm who earned the #14 seed.
"We are excited, and the team is ready to play" said COS head women's coach Ray Alvarado. "Playoff basketball is fun, and I tell them to not hold anything back."
COS women's basketball shared the conference title this year with Merced and Fresno City. COS has won the conference championship three out of the last four years which included a trip to the state championships last year. "Last years' experience helps us this year" said Alvarado, "we have a few key contributors from last year but the biggest lesson we learned is to take it one game at a time. We are focused only on San Jose."
COS men's basketball earned the #6 Northern California playoff seed after finishing the regular season 20-8 and a third-place finish in Central Valley Conference play. COS will host Shasta College at 7:30pm after the conclusion of the women's game. "Shasta College has a good team and they are well-coached" said COS men's basketball coach Rusty Smith. "We will be ready to go."
Shasta College comes into the game 18-9 and earned the #11 seed in the NorCal playoffs. Shasta College is led by sophomore guard Hunter Johnson who averages 14.2 points per game. "He's a good player and has only been held to single digits scoring three times this year, we need to be aware of where he is on the floor and defend him" said Smith.
Ticket price are controlled by the state athletic organization and are set at $12 for general admission and $8 for seniors 60 and over, children younger than 12, COS Faculty and Staff, and students. Admission is good for both games.
