COS vs. Chabot Game Notes
GAME NOTES . . .
College of the Sequoias vs. Chabot College
Saturday, November 7, 2015—Mineral King Bowl
RECORDS: After a 4-0 start, Sequoias has dropped its last four and is 4-4 overall. Chabot leads the Valley Conference with a 3-0 record, and is 6-2 overall with a 4-game winning streak.
LAST GAME: The Giants fell behind 17-0 and lost at Laney College 38-17 last Friday. Sequoias actually outgained Laney by two yards, but could only rush for 68 and had a punt blocked which led to a Laney touchdown. Chabot kicked a 44-yard field goal as time expired to tie the score, and then beat Modesto in overtime 60-53. Chabot gained 604 yards and allowed 606.
SERIES: COS leads 15-10. The first game was in 1970, when the teams met in the second round of the state playoffs. The schools played every year from 1985-98. The series resumed last year when Chabot joined the VC. The Gladiators won last year in Hayward 54-35.
RANKINGS: COS is now ranked 31st in the state and 17th in Northern California, in the latest state rankings of the JC Athletic Bureau. Chabot moved up to No. 10 in the state and No. 4 in Northern California. The Gladiators are also ranked nationally, No. 24 by the JC Gridiron.
COACHES: COS coach Irv Pankey is now in his 18th season on the Giants' staff and his third year as head coach. Pankey has played football at the highest levels, earning second team all-American honors as a senior at Penn State and then playing 13 seasons in the National Football League as an offensive lineman, with the Los Angeles Rams and Indianapolis Colts. He was originally hired at COS in 1998 as a physical education instructor and assistant football coach. Pankey's career record with the Giants is now 11-17. Chabot coach Danny Calcagno is now in his 12th season. A former Chabot quarterback and baseball player who played against COS, Calcagno came to the school in 2003 as an assistant and took over the program in 2004. After competing at Chabot, Calcagno attended and played at Sonoma State University. His BA degree is from SSU and master's from St. Mary's. He has had only one regular season losing record, and 'directed Chabot to five post-season bowl games. His teams have won four consecutive conference championships (three in the Golden Gate, last year in the VC) and he has an overall record of 73-50. His best team went 9-2 in 2011. Chabot has won 19 of its last 20 conference games, dating back to 2011. Calcago is the third winningest coach in school history.
GLADIATORS: One reason for Chabot's success this year is experience, as fully half their roster—39—are sophomores. That includes 4 returning all-conference players from last year: receiver Devijon Smith (injuries have limited him to playing only 4 of Chabot's 8 games), quarterback Jose Ferreira, linebacker Patrick Miranda and defensive back Kyle Campiotti. Bidding to repeat as all-VC, Ferreira has completed 69.1 percent of his passes for 1425 yards, with 13 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. He is also the team's leading rusher with 382 yards and 8 touchdowns. Other running backs to watch are sophomores Ondre Rudolph (348 yards) and Yachal Butler (322). Freshman Alan Busey is the leading receiver with 27, for 649 yards and 8 touchdowns. A strong kicking game has been a big part of the Gladiator success. Punter Gavin Scully has averaged 43.0 yards on 36 kicks, second best in the state, and Ivan Flores will likely be the all-conference kicker as he has hit 8 of 10 field goal attempts, and made 40 of 42 extra points. Chabot is averaging 457.8 yards a game, and its last two games has gained 537 and 604.
GIANTS: With the lesser conference teams in the past, COS will have to regroup in facing the conference's best team—Chabot—and then rival Fresno next week. To be effective on offense, the Giants will need to establish the running game again. COS ran well against Foothill, DeAnza and Feather River—all wins—and in a loss to Delta, but scored 38 points. Last week they only managed 68 against Laney. Brian Chester got his second start at QB last week but Javin Kilgo played a majority of the game, throwing for 214 yards and a TD. Elijah Porchia had his best game of the season, with 7 receptions for 68 yards. Devonte Jones had 7 tackles last week, Corey Collins 3 stops and 1.5 tackles for loss, and Ben Johnston 2 stops, a sack and a TFL.
NOTES: The Giants have 24 sophomores who are playing in their final home game tonight and will be introduced prior to the game…Sequoias has lost 17 of its last 18 conference games, dating back to 2012What a difference a couple of weeks makes. San Joaquin Delta was floundering a couple of weeks ago at 2-4 but with close wins over COS and Fresno, has now made it to No. 53 in the nation, the first time the Mustangs have been ranked nationally in several years.
