
COS upends #8 Butte
COS opens the season with a win over #8 Butte College.
COS went on the road Saturday and held on to defeat #8 Butte College 39-33. The Giants took a 18-7 halftime lead and made enough plays in the wild fourth quarter to come out with the win.
"I'm really happy that our guys never let up until the final buzzer sounded" said COS Head Football Coach Travis Burkett. "Butte never went away and our hats are off to them, but just happy the way our team competed the entire game."
Sophomore quarterback Nate Lamb (Tulare Union) completed 20 out of 26 passes for 239 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. Two of the those touchdowns were caught by sophomore tight end Anthony Valencia (Mt. Whitney) who caught seven passes for a total of seventy seven yards. Freshmen Alex Ledesma (Mission Oak) caught his only pass of the day for a ten yard touchdown with 5:58 to go in the game. "It was a great pass and catch from Lamb to Ledesma. It was a well covered and Alex (Ledesma) made a tough catch" said Burkett.
COS last score of the game came on a an eighteen yard run from freshmen tailback Danny Oliveria (Firebaugh) with 2:07 left in the fourth quarter.
On defense, COS had fifteen different players record at least one tackle, with Michael Wessel (Golden West) leading the team with four.
COS now hosts the #4 ranked team in the state, The College of San Mateo, at 11am Saturday September 10th at Sequoia Stadium on the campus of COS in Visalia.
