COS Football Wins Overtime Thriller Against Shasta
The Giants used a big 3rd quarter to get back in the game, and take the lead before overtime.
The COS Football team went on the road Saturday night and pulled off an overtime win over Shasta College 40-37. COS has now evened its record to 2-2 overall on the season and has won two straight games.
"This is a tough trip," said COS head coach Travis Burkett. "Shasta is in Redding, California and Shasta has a good football program. I'm proud of our players and staff for sticking together and having enough resiliency to play tough all the way to the end."
COS trailed 31-14 at halftime after a few costly turnovers in the 2nd quarter by the Giants, where Shasta was able to capitalize. "The beginning of the 2nd quarter was tough. Many teams would have folded after what happened. We were able to regroup and come out in the second half strong and got back in the game," said Burkett.
The Giants used a 20-0 third quarter to not only get back in the game, but to take a 34-31 lead. Shasta would tie the game in the 4th quarter with a field goal which set up the overtime.
During the overtime period, Shasta won the coin toss and would kick a field goal to take the lead 37-34 in their first possession. That is when COS' Jayden Loudermilk took over.
On COS' initial offensive play in overtime, quarterback Reilly Garcia handed the ball to tailback John Friend who then handed the ball off to wide receiver Jaylen Laudermilk who was coming around on a reverse. Laudermilk ran for 25 yards and was untouched on the play to secure the touchdown, and the win for the Giants. "What I loved about that play is that wide receiver Nick Nelson (El Diamante) was downfield blocking their cornerback, and lineman Karson Seaman (Los Molinos) was downfield blocking two linebackers so that Jayden could get in the endzone. I am proud of everyone for executing that play," said Burkett.
COS tallied 184 yards of net rushing on the night, led by Dylan Gurule with 82 yards and one touchdown. Quarterback Reilly Garcia tallied 177 yards in the air on 11-19 passing but rushed for 3 touchdowns on the night. The Giants had six receivers catch passes and was led by tight end Alex Herrera who tallied 51 yards.
COS will be back at home this Saturday at 11am as they take on Diablo Valley College from the bay area. COS' Sequoias Stadium is now complete and doors will open at 10am. General admission is $10 with seniors (62+) and students $5.
