College of the Sequoias Women's & Men's Swimming & Dive Wins at Shasta Meet

REDDING, Calif. – The College of the Sequoias swim and dive team put on a strong performance in a tri-meet against Clovis and Shasta College on February 7, 2025, competing in a range of events across sprints, distance races, and relays. 

At the end of the meet, both the COS Men's and Women's teams came out on top in overall points, winning both meets. 

Head Coach Allyson Briano praised her swimmers' efforts, saying, "This was a great test for us, and our athletes really stepped up. From relays to individual events, we saw some fantastic swims that we can build on moving forward."

Women's Highlights

The COS Women's 200 Medley Relay A team of Sierra Hodson (Tulare Western HS), Savannah Gates (Hartland Charter), Azulema Ayon (Exeter HS), and Kenzie Hyder (Porterville HS) won their relay, clocking 2:06.09, while the B team of Mikenna Curtis (Dinuba HS), Kallysta Cox (Strathmore HS), Eliana Salazar (Tulare Western HS), and Gracie Rivas (El Diamante HS) placed third (2:14.44). 

Hyder had a standout meet, winning the 200 free (2:07.81) and the 500 free (5:54.74). 

Ayon shined in the 50 free, touching first in 26.44, while Makaira Chavez (Selma HS) (fourth, 29.72), Curtis (fifth, 29.78), Rivas (seventh, 29.93), and Myranda Rodriguez (Mt. Whitney HS) (eighth, 30.31) all added key finishes. 

In the 100 free, Curtis secured first place (1:04.12), with Gates (second, 1:04.59), Cox (fourth, 1:05.93), and Autumn Gibson (Lemoore HS) (fifth, 1:07.56) contributing strong swims. 

For the 100 breast, Ayon continued her dominance, winning in 1:17.71, while Gates (second, 1:21.04), Cox (third, 1:21.14), and Gibson (fifth, 1:22.68) rounded out a deep COS presence in the event. 

Lauren Pelayo (El Diamante HS) led COS in diving, finishing third in the 1-meter event (135.05) and second in the 3-meter event (138.00). 

The 200 Free Relay team of Hyder, Pelayo, Gates, and Ayon put a stamp on the meet, winning in 1:51.05, with the B team of Gibson, Curtis, Rivas, and Hodson taking third (1:56.77). 

Men's Highlights

The COS men's 200 Medley Relay team of Vincente Sanchez (Golden West HS), Josh Mitchell (Redwood HS), Brendan Meyer (Lemoore HS), and Jack LoBue (Monache HS) delivered a close battle, finishing second in 1:46.94, less than a fourth of a second behind Clovis. The B relay team of Quinn Rea (Mt. Whitney HS), Chandler Bruton (Mt. Whitney HS), Isaac Maillard (Mt. Whitney HS), and Connor Rohman (Mt. Whitney HS) placed third in 1:51.82. 

Meyer secured first place in the 50 free (22.94), with LoBue (third, 24.09) and Taylor Greene (El Diamante HS) (fourth, 24.67) also earning top-five finishes. 

In the 200 IM, Rea delivered a great performance, winning the event in 2:13.55, while Bruton (fourth, 2:27.22) and Jared Ojeda (Monache HS) (sixth, 2:33.50) contributed valuable team points. 

For butterfly, Trent Regier (Kingsburg HS) dominated the 100 fly, winning in 56.78, while Maillard (third, 1:03.35) added to the Giants' success. 

In the 100 free, Rea continued his strong meet, taking first in 52.10, while Greene (third, 56.38) and Dylan Hunt (Central California Connections Academy) (fifth, 57.35) also performed well. 

The 100 back saw Sanchez secure second place (1:00.14), with Ojeda (third, 1:04.84) and Daniel Landucci (Porterville HS) (fourth, 1:18.18) rounding out Sequoias' efforts. 

For distance events, Meyer earned a second-place finish in the 500 free (5:41.07), followed by Aiden Ahlmeyer (Golden West HS) (third, 6:11.08) and Maillard (fourth, 6:38.90). 

In the 100 breast, Hunt led the COS swimmers, winning the event in 1:08.50, while Mitchell (second, 1:09.87), Bruton (third, 1:10.19), and LoBue (fourth, 1:10.47) completed a COS-dominated top four. 

Diving was another highlight for the Giants, with Liam Henshaw (Golden West HS) winning the 1-meter event (199.10) and taking first in the 3-meter event (185.60). Jackson Coon (Redwood HS) placed second in both events, while Guy Woodard (Golden West HS) finished third. 

The 200 Free Relay squad of LoBue, Rea, Sanchez, and Meyer won a thrilling race in 1:33.58, narrowly edging Clovis's team. 

Upcoming Meets

The Giants will look to continue their success at their next invitational, building on their impressive performances in this tri-meet. Their next meet with be the Delta Diving Invite on Friday, February 21 at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, California. They will return home to host their first invitational of the season, on Friday, February 28, for the COS Invite, which is slated to begin at 10:00 a.m.
