
COS Wins 42nd Annual Gilcrest Tournament
The COS women's basketball team won the 42nd Annual Gilcrest Tournament after 4 tournament victories over this past weekend.
The first game of the tournament came against Antelope Valley on Thursday. The Giants only shot 31% from the field, but it was an easy win for the Giants as they put away the Marauders 51-20. Janelle Sumilong led the Giants with 15 points in her double-double effort while also registering 10 rebounds. Shae Sanchez also had a double-double in this game as she scored 14 points, including knocking down 3 3-pointers while leading the team with 12 rebounds.
In the second round of the tournament, COS defeated College of the Canyons 71-46. The Giants got off to a quick start in this game going up 22-9 after the 1st quarter and never looked back.
Janelle Sumilong and Shae Sanchez picked up right where they left off from the previous game as Sumilong scored 18 points, while Sanchez scored a team high 19 points. Dejanee Gill also had a big game as she had a double-double in this game with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Hailey Scott also had 11 rebounds in his game.
In the semi-finals, the Giants played against the Ventura College Pirates. The Pirates were up 19-14 after the 1st quarter. The Giants would later come back and outscore the Pirates 17-6 and 22-11 in the 2nd and 3rd quarters respectively that would fuel their comeback win 61-48. "This was a tough win for us against one of the best programs in the state. Ned Mircetic is one of the best coaches around period and they are always hard to beat" said COS head coach Ray Alvarado.
In the finals of the tournament the Giants would play Sacramento City. COS came out on top 71-66 to win their second Gilcrest tournament in a row. "What an unbelievable feeling. I am so happy for our kids. This is the toughest tournament in the state and our kids showed a lot of tougheness this weekend" said Alvarado.
Janelle Sumilong was named the tournament's most valuable player. Julianna Gutierrez and Dejane Gill were named to the all-tournament team.
The Giants improved to 8-2 on the season. The Giants will next play Laney College at home on Friday, December 7th at 4pm which will be followed by the men at 6pm as they host San Diego Mesa.
