No. 1 Giants Defeat Allan Hancock 87-24 to Improve to 7-0
The No. 1 state-ranked College of the Sequoias women's basketball team extended their perfect start to the season with a commanding 87-24 road victory over Allan Hancock on Tuesday night in Santa Maria. A balanced effort and stifling defense propelled the Giants to their seventh consecutive win, as they held the Bulldogs to just 24 points on 17.3% shooting.
Campbell Vieg (Chico) had 14 points, going 6-for-7 from the field and Jocelyn Medina (Pierce) contributed 13 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals, including two 3-pointers. Mallary Gonzalez (Hoover HS) added 14 points and 8 rebounds, as the Giants built a 44-12 halftime lead.
Other key performers included Morgan Trigueiro (Caruthers HS), who chipped in with 12 points and 5 rebounds, and Luicia Ricci (Seattle) contributed with 8 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists.
"This was a great team win," Head Coach Tyler Newton said. "Our defense really set the tone early, and we got contributions from everyone. That's the kind of balance we need to keep this momentum going."
How It Happened
The Giants wasted no time establishing dominance, opening the game with a 16-5 first-quarter advantage. Vieg's efficiency around the rim and Medina's perimeter shooting sparked an early offensive surge. Allan Hancock struggled to find answers, managing just seven points in the second quarter as COS extended their lead with a 28-point quarter.
COS forced 24 turnovers, and controlled the boards with a 53-19 rebounding advantage. Gonzalez's work on the glass and Kaitlin Giacone's (Eureka) presence in the paint (10 points, eight rebounds) helped COS maintain their overwhelming lead.
"Our rebounding and defensive pressure were the keys tonight," Newton added. "Mallary and Kaitlin gave us great energy inside, and we capitalized on second-chance opportunities."
The Giants' defense was relentless in the second half, limiting Allan Hancock to just 12 points across the final two quarters. COS continued to build their lead with contributions from reserves like Tylie Hatcher (5 points) and Maya McNeal (6 rebounds).
