Jennifer Lucero's first-half hat trick powered College of the Sequoias' women's soccer team to its first win under new coach Elliott Hord, a 10-0 nonconference demolition of Cerro Coso on Sept. 17 at the Giants' campus field.
Elvira Garcia (Tulare Union High) scored the only goal Sequoias (1-3) would need against Cerro Coso (0-4), converting a feed from Marycruz Nerto (Lindsay) in the 5th minute.
Lucero (Fresno High) made it 2-0 in the 11th minute on the first of her three goals, which was assisted by Jahnessah Cavazos (Tulare Western) in the 11th minute. Lucero added unassisted goals in the 27th and 36th minutes.
The Giants also received a second first-half goal from Garcia, as well as strikes from Savanna Saesee (Redwood) and Gloria Silva (Mt. Whitney). Staley Martin (Mission Oak) assisted Saesee's goal. The rest were unassisted.
In the second half, Silva added a second goal, while Cavazos and Isabella Sanchez (Farmersville) added goals.
A match scheduled for Sept. 14 at Cerro Coso was canceled because of poor air quality.
Sequoias is set to return to action at 2 p.m. Sept. 24 at Sacramento City (2-1).
The Giants open Central Valley Conference play at 1 p.m. Sept. 28 by hosting Reedley (3-1-1).
