Giants Showcases Offense Against MPC, Battle to Draw Against Cosumnes River
COS 7, Monterey Peninsula 0
The College of the Sequoias men's soccer team dominated Monterey Peninsula in a 7-0 rout in front of their home crowd on September 20. The Giants were in control from start to finish, netting three goals in the first half and adding four more after the break.
Jose Fabian Sandoval (Tulare Union HS) opened the scoring in the 38th minute, assisted by Yahir Ramos (Granite Hills HS). Edward Perez (El Diamante HS) followed with a goal two minutes later, set up by Jesus Martinez (El Diamante HS). Just before halftime, Joshua Urista Herrera (El Diamante HS) made it 3-0, with Sandoval providing the assist.
The second half saw the Giants continue their relentless attack. Irvin Espinoza (Farmersville HS) added a goal in the 70th minute, followed by unassisted strikes from Ramos and Urista Herrera. Ramos capped off the scoring in the 85th minute, notching his second goal of the game.
"We executed our game plan perfectly," said Head Coach Abraham Campos. "It was a complete team effort, and I'm proud of how we stayed focused throughout."
COS 2, Cosumnes River 2
COS battled to a 2-2 draw against Cosumnes River on Tuesday, September 24. After falling behind early, the Giants mounted a second-half comeback but conceded a late equalizer.
Cosumnes River took the lead in the 14th minute through Brian Ramirez, assisted by Christian Brenes. Sequoias responded after halftime with an unassisted goal from Irvin Espinoza in the 62nd minute to level the score. In the 86th minute, Johnathan Ibarra (Porterville HS) gave the Giants a 2-1 lead with a solo effort, but Cosumnes River's Miguel Garcia scored just three minutes later to salvage a draw.
"We fought hard to get back into the game, but we need to tighten up defensively in those late moments," Campos said. "There are lessons to learn from this one."
Upcoming Matches
The Giants now turn their attention to their upcoming matches, aiming to build on the positive performances from the past week. They will host East Los Angeles on Friday, September 27 at 2 p.m. They will also host a doubleheader Tuesday, October 1 as the Women's hosts Madera at 12 p.m. and the Men's hosts Bakersfield at 2 p.m at Sequoias Stadium.
