Cross Country Teams Ready for the Big Show
Coming off their best races of the season at the NorCal Championships two weeks ago, the College of Sequoias Women's and Men's Cross Country teams will be competing in the California Community College State Championships on Saturday, November 19 at Woodward Park in Fresno. The women's 5K race will start at 10 a.m. followed by the men's 4-mile race at 11:00 a.m.
The Lady Giants enter the meet as this year's NorCal Champions and are ranked second in the state. It should be a very close competition between the COS women and three strong contenders from Southern California: Glendale College, Riverside College, and Mt. San Antonio College. Leading the way for the COS team will be Alyssa Block and Jordyn Zorn, who placed first and second place respectively in the NorCal Championships. They will be closely followed by teammates Ariana Jasso, Jewel Jasso, Elizabeth Sartuche, Kelsay McClendon, and Sarah Reid, all racers whose times have steadily improving over the past few weeks.
In the men's race, Giants Adam Gonzalez, Rogaciano Ortiz Silva, and Arturo Ochoa have a good opportunity to lead the men to a top-ten team finish following their fifth-place finish at the NorCal Championships. Also being counted on to push the team toward success are Adrian Solis, Matthew Villarreal, Gary Austin, and Luis Gonzalez.
"We, the racers, Coach David Sanchez and I, we've all been looking forward to this meet for several weeks; it is a great opportunity to show the vast improvement we have made during the season, and also demonstrate the level of desire and competitiveness that these teams take into every competition," says Coach David Bronzan. "I am very proud of our home-grown local athletes that have raced with the best in the state all season long. It's going to be great … going to be exciting!"
