
Giants start the season 5-3
The Giants have started the season with a 5-3 record.
They opened season against College of the Siskiyous and Sacramento City in a doubleheader at Sacramento City, the Giants secured a 10-0 victory against Siskiyous in just 5 innings. Kristina Nunes (Riverdale HS) and Islea Villarreal (Dinuba HS) led the offense, while Bailee Bustos (Mission Oak HS) had a big performance as she only allowed 2 hits and struck out 7 batters. Nunes went 2-for-2 with 3 RBIs and Villareal went 4-for-4 with 1 RBI.
In the second game, Sequoias continued their winning streak with a 6-1 win over Sacramento City, with Anela Hernandez (Waialua, HI) and Grace Chojnacki (Mission Oak HS) standing out. Hernandez contributed with 2 RBIs and Chojnacki went 2-for-4 with 1 RBI and pitched 7 innings and only allowed 3 hits and 1 run.
The Giants swept Modesto College in their next series. They provided a ton of offense in Game 1 as they had 13 hits as a team as they won 8-1. Marissa Vasquez (Selma HS) went 3-for-3 with 1 RBI and Grace Chojnacki went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs. Bailee Bustos went 2-for-3 on offense, and also pitched 7 strong innings allowing only 1 run with 6 strikeouts. In the second game, Skye Gomez (Corona, CA), Bailee Bustos, and Emily Ibarra (Redwood HS) contributed to a 9-4 win. Gomez went 1-for-2 with 2 RBIs and Bustos went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs. Ibarra added in a double and a triple, by going 2-for-5 with 1 RBI.
For the next series, COS traveled to West Valley to play a doubleheader with Santa Rosa and West Valley and split the day by going 1-1. The Giants opened the day by winning 6-1 over Santa Rosa with Eliza Gamez (Redwood HS) and Kristina Nunes being the standouts offensively. Gamez went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and Nunes went 4-for-4 with 1 RBI. Bailee Bustos had a great outing by allowing 2 hits and 11 strikeouts in 7 innings. The Giants lost the second game of the doubleheader 3-0 to West Valley. The top performer of the game was Skye Gomez as she went 2-for-3.
The Giants traveled to Cabrillo College for the next series and went 0-2 as they lost to Cabrillo and San Joaquin Delta. The top performers of the day included Aislynn Ortiz and Bailee Bustos; Ortiz provided 2 hits including a double and 1 RBI, while Bustos contributed with 6.2 innings pitched and 8 strikeouts.
The Giants now will prepare for series against Diablo Valley, San Mateo, and Monterey Peninsula, before returning home for a home series against Bakersfield College on Thursday, February 22 starting at 11 am.
