Giants' RB Green signs with NCAA D-II power; LB Maggini named academic all-state

College of the Sequoias sophomore running back Davonte Green will continue his academic and athletic career at an NCAA Division II powerhouse university.
The Hammond, La., native has signed with Northwest Missouri of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The Bearcats have won six D-II national titles, most recently in 2016, and finished as the runner-up four times.
Northwest Missouri, based in Maryville, is getting a two-time All-Central Valley Conference selection in Green, who rushed for 963 yards and seven touchdowns on 191 carries last season.
The 5-foot-9, 195-pounder averaged 5.0 yards per carry and 87.5 yards per game while helping the Giants go 6-5 overall and reach a bowl game for the first time in 10 years.
During the 2018 season, Green, who didn't become COS' feature back until its eighth game, rushed for 702 yards and five touchdowns on 121 carries, averaging 5.8 yards per carry.
For his career, Green rushed 312 times for 1,665 yards and 12 touchdowns while losing only one fumble.
Northwest Missouri captured a share of its 30th Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association title and reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA D-II playoffs during a 12-2 season in 2019.
The Bearcats' top two running backs were seniors, which gives Green an opening to come in and make an immediate contribution.
Green also received offers from Peru State, Eastern New Mexico and Tabor College before committing to Northwest Missouri.
ACADEMIC HONORS FOR MAGGINI
COS sophomore linebacker Mitch Maggini was named to the California Community College Football Coaches Association's Academic All-State Team.
The 6-foot-2, 230-pounder out of Riverdale was one of 41 players from throughout the state to receive the honor for players who carried a 3.51 grade-point average or higher. Maggini's GPA was 3.66.
A two-time All-Central Valley Conference selection during his time at COS, Maggini was named the team's "Giant of the Year" after producing a team co-leading 60 tackles along with two quarterback sacks, 2.5 tackles for losses and a blocked kick as the Giants went 6-5 and reached a bowl for the first time in 10 years.
Maggini had 46 tackles, fourth-best on the team, during his freshman season in 2018.
Maggini is currently uncommitted to his next college.
