COS Football Dominates Santa Rosa in Last Test Before Conference Play
COS went on the road and scored a commanding 40-18 victory over Santa Rosa JC on Friday night. COS moves to 4-2 on the season and will open up conference play next Saturday at Sequoias Stadium at 1pm versus Sacramento City College. Sophomore quarterback Reilly Garcia threw for 275 yards and 4 touchdowns, as COS never allowed the Bear Cubs (2-3) to get closer than 6 points after the first quarter.
The game started off with COS striking first at 5:15 in the opening quarter. Garcia connected with Nick Nelson (El Diamante) on a 13-yard touchdown pass, capping off a quick 6- play, 36-yard drive.
After a 4-yard touchdown run by Dalton Armbruster (Corcoran) made it 13-0, Santa Rosa responded with a 75-yard drive, capped by a 15-yard touchdown run by Chase Vehmeyer to cut the deficit to 13-7. But COS would finish the half strong, scoring 15 unanswered points to go into the half leading 28-7.
The Giants did not let up in the second half. Garcia's 21-yard touchdown pass to Gage Armbruster (Corcoran) pushed the lead to 34-7, while Gage's brother, Dalton Armbruster (Corcoran) extended the lead with a 37-yard touchdown run late to give the Giants a 40-7 lead.
"This was big for us" said COS First Year Head Coach Matt Mendonca. "We had a short week and this was our third long road trip in a row. The kids and the staff did a great job handling the short week, and the trip. But now we are 0-0 on the year. Conference play is what matters and we need to be ready to play against a very good Sacramento City Football Team. We need the community to come out and support us at home to give us that edge."
Sacramento City will come to Sequoias Stadium next Saturday with a 3-2 record having similar results, against similar opponents to COS. Sacramento is led by freshmen running back Jack Carner and sophomore wide receiver Scott Nixon. Kick off is slated for 1pm.
