#14 Giants Set to Host Reedley College Following Bye Week
On October 19th, the College of the Sequoias Giants opened conference play with a 28-10 victory over Sacramento City College at Sequoias Stadium, by focusing on the little things. The Giants' attention to detail paid in that conference opener with COS Head Football Coach Matt Mendonca emphasizing that COS focused on every aspect of preparation, from travel to game day timing. "Anything that could be controlled, we worked on," said Mendonca. "It's about building habits and carrying that into every game we play."
Now heading into their matchup with Reedley College (3-5) this Saturday at Sequoias Stadium, College of the Sequoias (5-2) remains committed to this mindset. "Reedley is a team that can put points up quickly, especially through the air," Mendonca commented. Reedley's offense is led by quarterback Jake Hamilton (Del Oro High), who has thrown for 924 yards and eight touchdowns this season, often targeting receiver LaDanian Streets (East), who averages over 70 receiving yards per game. "Our defense has to stay disciplined because they're facing a unit that has big-play potential across the board," Mendonca said. "Preparation and focus will be key." The Giants' defense is ranked 12th in points per game allowed and 8th in total yards allowed in the state. Their leaders include Toyko Gordon, who ranks 3rd in the state in sacks (6.5) and Tovie Martin (Clovis HS), who ranks 8th in the state in sacks (5.5). Louis Sanders is another standout on the defensive side as he ranks 2nd in the state in interceptions (5).
On offense, the Giants are led by quarterback Reilly Garcia, averaging 239.7 yards per game, which currently places him in 7th in state. Standout freshman receiver Gage Armbruster (Corcoran HS) is as one of his primary targets, averaging 84.7 yards and scoring 6 touchdowns this season. "Our offense has been balanced and consistent, and we're going to continue to spread the ball around to give our guys opportunities to make plays," said Mendonca.
Kickoff is this Saturday, November 2nd, at 1:00 p.m. at Sequoias Stadium. The game will feature Youth Jersey Day, where all youth wearing their football jerseys will receive free admission. Gates open at noon, with halftime performances by the COS Dance Team and Cheer Squad. Enjoy lunch at Timbers Cafe near the entry plaza.
