COS Football Focuses on Little Things Going Into Conference Play
COS will host Sacramento City College on Saturday October 19th at 1pm at Sequoias Stadium.
On October 5th College of the Sequoias had a chance to beat the #2 ranked team in the state, Butte College on the road. COS had no timeouts left and went into the final drive with a chance to win the game. COS fell short and ended up losing the game 14-12 and left the team feeling like they had unfinished business to handle. Head coach Matt Mendonca said after that game "there are no moral victories and we just didn't do enough of the little things right. After we lost that game at Butte, our focus has been on doing all the little things correct. That means the coaches too, that means me."
COS' attention to detail paid off in a major way last Friday evening at Santa Rosa Junior College as the Giants defeated the bear cubs on the road 40-18. " We focused on every little thing that we could from being on time to the bus, to taking the field at the proper time for stretching, to making sure that we had everything we needed the morning of the game, to what time we had to leave the field to do our pregame talk before kickoff. Anything that we could focus on that was a minor detail we focused on it. We need to take that detailed mindset into this Sacramento game" said Mendonca.
COS will host Sacramento City College (3-2) this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Sequoia Stadium. COS (4-2) continues to focus on the little things. "Sacramento City is a good football team they come in with a 3-2 record and they've had some really good wins" said Mendonca. "They are coming off of a great performance and we need to be focused and ready." Sacramento City is led by 6 ft 2 sophomore wide receiver Scott Nixon out of Sheldon High School in Sacramento. Nixon already has two games this year where he's accumulated over a hundred yards and he is the favorite target of the Sacramento City quarterbacks, who split time between two players. "Our defense needs to be ready to play," said Mendonca "they have good offensive weapons all across the field." The COS defense is currently ranked 13th in the state in points allowed and one of the leaders on defense is sophomore defensive back Louis Sanders who leads the state with five interceptions.
On the offensive side of the ball COS is led by quarterback Riley Garcia who comes in throwing for 260 yards per game. One of Garcia's favorite targets is freshman wide receiver Gage Armbruster from Corcoran high school who is averaging 88 yards per game and has scored a touchdown in five separate games. "Our offense has really come along this year and I'm really pleased with how they've played. We're just going to continue to take what the opposing defense give us and keep playing solid football. We have numerous players that can make plays and we're just going to continue to distribute the football to those guys and let them make their plays" said Mendonca.
Kickoff this Saturday is slated for 1pm with gates opening at noon. Halftime performances will be from the COS Dance Team and COS Cheer Squad. Come when gates open and enjoy lunch at Timbers Cafe located near the entry plaza. General admission tickets are $10 and seniors, students, and veterans are $5.
