#14 COS Aims to Extend Winning Streak in Key Game Against Fresno City
The #14 College of the Sequoias Giants improved to 6-2 after a decisive 34-17 victory over Reedley College. The Giants executed a well-rounded game plan that showcased their commitment to detail, a focus Head Coach Matt Mendonca continues to emphasize. "We've been dialed in, and it's paying off. We're building habits that carry into every game," Mendonca stated.
Now, COS heads into a matchup with #9 Fresno City College (6-2) on Saturday, November 9th, at Sequoia Stadium. COS is a game ahead of Fresno City in the conference standings, making this a pivotal game for both sides. "Fresno City is a disciplined team that can make plays in all phases of the game. We have to stay sharp and bring our best," said Mendonca.
The Rams' offense is led by quarterbacks Ryan Markarian and Ya'J Vance, who together have thrown for 1,733 yards and 18 touchdowns. Fresno's receiving corps is headlined by Nahzae Cox, who has 434 yards and 4 touchdowns, and Ramon Ruiz, who has contributed 416 yards and 5 touchdowns. "Their passing attack is strong, so our defense has to stay disciplined and focused on each play," Mendonca noted.
COS's defense, ranked 10th in the state for points allowed (17.3), and is anchored by standout pass rushers Tokyo Gordon and Tovie Martin (Clovis HS), both of whom have recorded 6.5 sacks this season, which ranks them 6th in the state. Additionally, defensive back Louis Sanders remains a crucial player with 5 interceptions. "Our defense has been tough all year, and expect the same this week," Mendonca said.
On offense, COS quarterback Reilly Garcia leads the Giants with 2,000 passing yards, where he ranks 6th in the state, and 20 touchdowns. His primary targets include Gage Armbruster (Corcoran HS), who has been exceptional, with 750 receiving yards and 9 touchdowns, and Dontae Gentles, who has 576 receiving yards on the season. The offense has been consistent and balanced all year as Garcia continues to distribute the ball to our playmakers.
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Sequoia Stadium. Gates open at noon, with halftime entertainment from the COS Dance Team and Cheer Squad. Tickets are $10 for general admission, with $5 tickets for seniors, students, and veterans.
