COS hosts Fresno this Saturday in doubleheader
COS Basketball to host Fresno City this Saturday:
COS is hosting a men's and women's basketball doubleheader this Saturday against Fresno City College. The women's game will tip off at 3pm and the men's game is scheduled for 5pm. "They are going to be great games because both COS and Fresno have men's and women's teams that can compete for the Central Valley Conference, Northern California, and State Championships. We are hoping to have a big crowd supporting our COS teams on Saturday" said COS Athletic Director Brent Davis.
The COS (10-5) and Fresno City (13-3) men's team have already played twice this year. Each team won the championship of the other's tournament. On November 19th the two teams met in the finals of the Fresno City College tournament and COS won the game 78-63 behind Kody Wilson's 25-point performance. "We played great defense that day and we had many players contribute to the win" said COS Men's Basketball Coach Rusty Smith. Fast forward a month to December 17th in the finals of the COS tournament and Fresno City came away with the victory 75-65. "They got out to an early lead on us that day and they are too good of a team to try and catch up to with a big deficit. I tip my hat to them" said Smith. "This game should be a fun one to watch and we need COS fans to come out and cheer our team on."
The women's game is featuring two of the best teams in the state in COS (17-1) and Fresno City (14-3). COS is currently ranked #4 in the state with Fresno being #6. However, COS' only loss of the year came against Fresno 65-55 on December 15th in the West Hills tournament in Lemoore. "Fresno hit shots down the stretch and forced us into some key turnovers. They deserved to win that day and our game this Saturday should be a battle" said COS Women's head coach Ray Alvarado.
COS' starting lineup includes four freshmen with the lone sophomore being Zharia McCollum who leads the team in scoring with 11.3 points per game. But maybe COS' most steady all-around player of late may be freshmen Mickey Sasson. "Mickey is having a good season and can handle the ball, shoot, and defend. She is a great all-around player" said Alvarado.
For COS fans that get there early they may receive (limited supply) a COS basketball t-shirt donated by KRC Safety and KRC Graphics. Other family friendly activities such as face painting will be available inside the COS Porter Field House.
