Giants rolling during 5-0 start
COS extended its undefeated start under new men's basketball coach Dallas Jensen to 5-0 with a pair of wins at the Fresno City College Classic.
The Giants, who rose from No. 6 in the preseason poll to No. 4 in the first California Community College Men's Basketball Association state rankings, beat Sierra 62-56 on Nov. 16 and Foothill 75-56 on Nov. 17.
Against Sierra (2-3), Ryan Johnson (Hanford), who was COS starting quarterback in football last season, put up 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
A balanced effort for the Giants also featured three points, nine assists, six rebounds and four steals by Dewayne Holmes (Riverside); 10 points and three assists by Savion Johnson (Hanford); eight points, 11 rebounds and three assists from Elihu Cobb (Santa Maria); 14 points and five rebounds from Amil Fields (Hayward); and six points and seven rebounds by Tiveon Stroud (Selma).
Fields went off for 19 points and six rebounds against Foothill (3-3).
COS also received nine points, three rebounds and three assists from Holmes; nine points from Carlos Allen (Atlanta); five points, seven assists and five rebounds from Tiyon Martin (Pasadena); and 10 points and four rebounds from Stroud.
The Giants shot 46 percent from beyond the 3-point line, including a 4-of-9 performance from Fields and 3-of-5 effort from Holmes.
COS has the week off. They play next Nov. 26 against Modesto (3-1). Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. from Porter Field House.
