College of the Sequoias erased a 15-point second-half deficit, but Richard Kawakami's tip-in with 2.3 seconds left spoiled the upset bid and lifted Fresno City College to an 81-80 Central Valley Conference men's basketball victory Feb. 5.
The state No. 4-ranked Rams (20-3, 9-0) now lead the No. 9 Giants (18-5, 7-2) by two games with five to play as Fresno City moved closer to securing a 19th straight conference championship.
Tiveon Stroud (Selma High) led COS with 17 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two blocks.
Ryan Johnson (Hanford) had 15 points and eight rebounds, while Tiyon Martin (Pasadena) contributed 16 points and five assists for the Giants.
COS also received 11 points, four assists and three rebounds from Milton Burnett (Bullard), 10 points and four rebounds from Elihu Cobb (Santa Maria) and nine points from Amil Fields (Hayward).
The Giants return home to Porter Field House on Feb. 8 when they host Merced (8-13, 2-7). Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
COS, which is looking to earn a third straight berth into the Northern California Regional playoffs, has two more regular season home games: Feb. 19 against Porterville and Feb. 21 against West Hills-Lemoore. Both games are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
