No. 6 Giants Showcased Their Offense in Road Victory over Merced
MERCED, Calif. - The College of the Sequoias men's basketball team delivered a 95-65 win over Merced College on Wednesday night, extending their play in conference play. The Giants, now 16-3 (5-0) on the season, showcased their depth on both ends of the court.
Sophomore Leyton McGovern (Anderson, IN) led the way with a game-high 29 points, knocking down six three-pointers and grabbing nine rebounds. Davis White (Saugus HS) contributed an all-around performance with 27 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists while hitting 5 shots from beyond the arc. Jaden Haire (Hanford West HS) added another double-double with 13 points and a season-high 20 rebounds, controlling the paint for the Giants.
Sequoias started strong, taking a 40-23 lead into halftime behind sharp shooting and physical defense. The Giants shot 45.7% from the field, including an impressive 50.0% (14-for-28) from three-point range. They controlled the boards with a 59-31 rebounding advantage and tallied 24 assists as a team.
"We played a complete game tonight," Head Coach Dallas Jensen said. "Leyton and Davis were phenomenal offensively, and Jaden was a monster on the boards. This was a total team effort, and I'm proud of how we stayed disciplined and executed our game plan."
The Giants pulled away further in the second half, scoring 55 points and holding Merced to just 35.2% shooting from the field. The Giants' bench also contributed, with Jayson Mathews (Grant HS) and Carter Glick (Mt Whitney HS) adding productive minutes and scoring.
"We're starting to find our rhythm as a team," Jensen added. "The energy and unselfishness on both ends of the court we showed tonight are things we need to carry forward."
The Giants will return to Porter Field House on Saturday, January 25, to host Porterville College at 5:00 p.m., the Women's will also host Porterville College at 3:00 p.m., as they both look to continue their play and stay atop the conference standings.
