Tony Espinosa and Katalina Castillo Lead COS at NorCal Multi Championships
SANTA ROSA, Calif. – College of the Sequoias Track & Field turned in a strong showing at the 2025 California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A) Northern California Multi Championships, held April 8–9 at Santa Rosa Junior College. Freshmen Tony Espinosa and Katalina Castillo (Corcoran HS) each earned top-six finishes while competing in their first collegiate multi-event championships.
Espinosa placed fourth in the men's decathlon, totaling 5,751 points. He opened with a third-place finish in the 100 meters (11.29) and added top-10 finishes in nine of the ten events. Espinosa was eighth in the long jump (5.92m/19-5.25), 12th in the shot put (8.65m/28-4.5), and third in the high jump (1.75m/5-8.75). He ran 51.83 in the 400 meters to take sixth.
He continued his scoring with a third-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles (15.96), followed by a 24.05m (78-11) mark in the discus and 3.30m (10-10) in the pole vault, good for eighth. Espinosa delivered one of the top javelin marks of the meet, placing second at 42.43m (139-2) before closing strong with a fifth-place finish in the 1500 meters (4:41.84).
On the women's side, Castillo placed sixth in the heptathlon with 3,605 points, leading all Central Valley Conference athletes. She finished third in the 200 meters (26.15) and closed with a dominant first-place finish in the 800 meters, running 2:24.54—her best time this season.
Castillo added a sixth-place finish in the long jump (4.60m/15-1.25) and was fifth in the javelin (28.40m/93-2). She also posted marks of 18.58 in the 100-meter hurdles (13th), 1.34m (4-4.75) in the high jump (11th), and 6.74m (22-1.5) in the shot put (14th).
The two freshmen's efforts in the high-demand championship meet showcased their talent and potential, contributing to the Giants' continued push toward a strong postseason run.
The Giants will return to competition at the JUCO Division of the Mt. SAC Relays on Saturday, April 12, followed by a busy stretch of meets next week. COS will compete at the Mt. SAC Elite Meet (April 17–19), the Cal State Los Angeles Meet (April 17–19), and the Hartnell Last Chance Meet on Friday, April 18.
