Giants Secure Back-to-Back Wins Over Modesto and Porterville 

VISALIA, Calif. – The College of the Sequoias women's tennis team (7-0, 3-0) picked up two conference victories, defeating Modesto Junior College 7-2 on February 27 before blanking Porterville College 9-0 on February 28. The Giants showcased their depth and consistency in both matches, securing key wins in doubles and singles. 

Giants Take Down Modesto 7-2 

COS started strong against Modesto, winning two of three doubles matches. The No. 2 pairing of Summer Herrera (Mt. Whitney HS) and Mia Orosco (Dinuba HS) came from behind after trailing 1-2 to claim an 8-4 victory. Herrera's well-placed lobs helped set up Orosco's finishing shots at the net. At No. 3 doubles, Hannah Salazar (Tulare Western HS) and Sadie Avila (Hanford HS) played steady from the baseline and the net, rolling to an 8-1 win. 

The Giants kept their momentum in singles, winning five of six matches. Herrera secured the win at No. 1 after her opponent retired. Jaden Godoy (Dinuba HS) battled for a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 3, while Avila, Orosco, and Salazar each picked up straight-set victories to close out the match. 

Giants Sweep Porterville 9-0 

Sequoias followed up with a flawless performance against Porterville, winning all three doubles matches without dropping a game. The No. 1 duo of Herrera and Godoy cruised to an 8-0 win, while Zambrano and Avila also posted an 8-0 shutout at No. 2. At No. 3, Salazar and Orosco completed the sweep with an 8-0 victory. 

The Giants carried their momentum into singles, winning all six matches in dominant fashion. Herrera, Zambrano, Avila, Orosco, and Breanna Garcia (El Diamante HS) all blanked their opponents 6-0, 6-0, while Godoy dropped just three games in a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 3.

Head coach Martin Herrera praised the team's consistency and chemistry, stating, "I was pleased with how we continue to play hard throughout the matches. They did a great job of using different strategies in both singles and doubles to put themselves in favorable positions to win points." 

Upcoming Matches

The Giants will aim to build on their momentum as they continue conference play on the road this week. They will first travel to Fresno City on Tuesday, March 4 at 1:00 p.m., and will also go on the road to Reedley College on Friday, March 7 at 1:00 p.m.
