Giants headed to FCC for March 3 doubleheader after opening CVC with win
College of the Sequoias' softball team will prep for a March 3 doubleheader against rival Fresno City while perched atop the Central Valley Conference standings.
Olivia Aguigam made sure of that.
The sophomore right-hander out of El Diamante High pitched a one-hitter as the Giants (10-7-1) opened conference play Feb. 27 with a 7-0 victory over visiting Merced (2-10).
Aguigam (8-6) threw 55 of her 84 pitches for strikes while walking two and striking out four. She faced four batter over the minimum en route to pitching her fourth shutout of the season.
Emily Ibarra (Redwood) provided Aguigam the only run she would need with a first-inning, run-scoring single.
Callie Vincent (Woodlake) put COS up 2-0 in the second with a run-scoring single.
The Giants' three-run third-inning was highlighted by an RBI single from Alexis Garcia (Orange Cove), while a two-run fourth featured a sacrifice fly from Ibarra and a run-scoring double by Audra Pratt (Golden West).
Ibarra finished with two hits to lead COS' eight-hit attack.
After facing Fresno City in a March 3 doubleheader with games scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m., COS will play at Reedley at 2 p.m. March 5.
The Giants next home game is March 6 when they close out their non-conference schedule with a doubleheader against Siskiyous. Games are set for noon and 2 p.m.
