Giants sweep Siskiyous; resume CVC play March 12 at home vs. Taft
College of the Sequoias softball team walked off a winner in its final non-conference game of the season as Monica Meza (Caruthers High) scored on an error in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Giants over Siskiyous 4-3 on March 6.
The Giants (13-8-1) tied the score 3-3 in the sixth on an RBI double by Audra Pratt (Golden West) and a run-scoring single by Alexis Garcia (Orange Cove), and received an RBI groundout by Garcia in the second en route to earning a doubleheader home sweep of the Eagles (4-12).
COS won the first game 2-0 behind a four-hitter from Olivia Aguigam (El Diamante), who walked one and struck out eight.
Callie Vincent (Woodlake) scored the only run the Giants would need in the second inning, scoring when a single to center field Madelyn Duran (Tulare Western) was played for an error.
Meza singled home Duran for a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning.
The Giants also played a pair of Central Valley Conference games last week, losing 4-1 at Fresno City on March 3 and beating host Reedley 11-1 in six innings on March 5.
Against the state No. 13-ranked Rams (8-10, 2-1), Teya Vincent opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning and COS never caught up.
Emily Ibarra (Redwood) responded with a solo homer in the top of the third to make it 2-1, but that's as close as the Giants would get.
Against Reedley (10-12, 3-1), Ibarra and Vincent clubbed homers to back a strong start from Garcia in the circle.
Ibarra's homer, a two-run shot in the second, gave COS a 6-1 lead. Vincent's homer, a two-run shot in the seventh, provided the final margin of victory.
The Giants (2-1 in CVC play) also received an RBI bunt single from Vincent, an RBI groundout from Duran and an RBI single from Garcia in the first, and sacrifice fly by Garcia in the second, and a run-scoring triple and a run-scoring single by Pratt in the sixth.
Ibarra finished with three of COS' 13 hits. Pratt, Vincent and Duran all had two apiece.
Garcia earned the win, allowing no earned runs on eight hits over six innings while striking out three.
COS is set to resume conference play March 12 at home against Taft (1-13, 0-3). First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. The Giants will also host CVC-leading Porterville (6-11, 2-0) at noon March 14.
