Giants host Cerritos, Folsom Lake in home debut
College of the Sequoias' 11 freshmen women's basketball recruits will make their home debut this weekend during a crossover event also featuring Reedley, Cerritos and Folsom Lake.
The Giants (3-1) are scheduled to face Cerritos (1-3) at 4 p.m. Nov. 15 and Folsom Lake (3-1) at 2 p.m. Nov. 16 at Porter Field House. Central Valley Conference rival Reedley (1-0) plays Folsom Lake at 2 p.m. Nov. 15 and Cerritos at noon Nov. 16.
Admission for all games is $5.
Freshmen newcomers include guard Serena Ybarra (Coalinga), guard Neli Diaz (McFarland), point guard Aubrey Nunes (El Diamante), guard McKenna Hsiung (Bakersfield), guard Clarissa Chavez (Redwood), guard Lucy Tazio (El Diamante), guard Felicia Ramirez (Caruthers), guard Sapphire Jones (Hanford), guard Haille Edwards (Ridgeview-Bakersfield), Kuda Cessay (Atlanta) and Savannah Surfus (Redwood).
Ramirez is averaging a team second-best 12.3 points a game, while Edwards (10.7) and Nunes (10.3) are also averaging double-figure scoring. Ybarra, Diaz, Hsiung, Chavez and Jones are all averaging at least four points per game.
The Giants have been led by sophomore guard Alaysia Reed (Las Vegas), one of two returners off a team that reached the state's Elite Eight for the fourth time in the past five seasons in March.
Reed is averaging a team-leading 14.3 points a game for COS, who are ranked No. 5 in Northern California in the California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association preseason poll.
Guard Elyssa Brumfield (Golden Valley-Bakersfield), who is averaging 6.8 points per game, is COS' only other returning player from a team that went 28-4 overall and tied Merced for the conference title last season.
Nunes had 26 points and 12 rebounds, while Reed contributed 15 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals as COS pulled away from Allan Hancock for a 71-66 non-conference victory on Nov. 13 in Santa Maria.
The Giants trailed 55-53 through three quarters before outscoring the Bulldogs (1-3) 18-11 in the fourth.
Brumfield had 12 points and five rebounds, and Diaz added eight points and two rebounds off the bench for COS, which won its third straight game.
Following this weekend's COS Crossover, the Giants play next at 3 p.m. Nov. 23 when they host Allan Hancock.
