Giants cruise to 2 wins during home crossover event
There's a new cast of players, but the same suffocating defensive results for COS' women's basketball team.
With the program's 11 freshmen on display for the home crowd for the first time, the Giants defeated Cerritos 77-53 on Nov. 15 and Folsom Lake 65-40 on Nov. 16 during the COS Crossover at Porter Field House.
Freshman Aubrey Nunes (El Diamante) led COS (5-1) with 14 points, 14 rebounds and two blocks against Cerritos. Other major freshmen contributors included Serena Ybarra (Coalinga), who had 12 points and nine rebounds; Neli Diaz (McFarland), who had 11 points and four rebounds; and Lucy Tazio (El Diamante) and Sapphire Jones (Hanford), who each had eight points.
Returner Elyssa Brumfield (Golden Valley-Bakersfield) dded 10 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals.
The Giants defense forced Cerritos, which reached the second round of the Southern California Regionals last season, into 22.2% shooting and 20 turnovers.
Against Folsom Lake, Ybarra had 14 points, five rebounds, three assists and four steals to pace COS, which led 24-11 after the first quarter and never looked back.
Alaysia Reed (Las Vegas) had 12 points, three rebounds and three assists, Nunes had nine points and four rebounds and Jones added eight points off the bench for the Giants, who won their fifth straight game.
COS returns to action Nov. 23 when it hosts Allan Hancock. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. from Porter Field House. The Giants downed the Bulldogs 71-66 in Santa Maria on Nov. 13.
