Giants roll behind Reed; next up: Gilcrest Tournament
The best game of Alaysia Reed's season-plus career at COS powered the Giants to a sixth straight victory.
Reed, a sophomore from Las Vegas, had 20 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, six steals and one block to lead the Giants to an 80-61 win over Allan Hancock on Nov. 23 at Porter Field House.
COS (6-1) began to pull away in the second quarter, outscoring Allan Hancock 23-14 to overcome a one-point first-quarter deficit.
The Giants put the Bulldogs (3-4) away with a 22-point fourth quarter.
Aubrey Nunes (El Diamante) had 14 points, 12 rebounds and four steals; McKenna Hsiung (Bakersfield) had 11 points, two rebounds and two assists; Serena Ybarra (Coalinga) had 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists; Elyssa Brumfield (Golden Valley-Bakersfield) had five points, four rebounds and four assists; and Neli Diaz (McFarland) added 14 points off the bench for COS.
The Giants shot 40.7 percent beyond the 3-point line, including a 4-for-5 performance from Diaz.
COS will be idle until the 43rd annual Gilcrest Tournament on Dec. 5-7 at Porter Field House.
The Giants are set to open against Canyons (1-2) at 7 p.m. Dec. 5.
The newly revised eight-team tournament also features Reedley (2-3), Mt. San Antonio (5-2), San Joaquin Delta (6-0), L.A. Valley (0-2), Ventura (6-0) and Chabot (6-2).
If COS wins its opener, it will face the winner between Ventura and Chabot at 7 p.m. Dec. 6. If the Giants lose, they get the Ventura/Chabot loser at 3 p.m. Dec. 6.
The championship game is set for 4 p.m. Dec. 7.
