Giants fall to Reedley, return to action Jan. 25 at Porterville
College of the Sequoias' women's basketball team didn't have an answer for Aurelie Bevao.
The freshman point guard from Le Tampon, France, scored 39 points while playing all 40 minutes to lead Reedley to a 68-63 Central Valley Conference victory over the Giants on Jan. 18 Porter Field House.
Bevao was 7 of 16 from 3-point land and converted all 14 of her free throw attempts. She also had six rebounds, two steals and two blocks for the Tigers (7-12, 2-1)
The game was essential decided at the free throw line, where Bevao made more free throws than COS attempted (seven).
It was the third straight loss and fourth in the past five games for the Giants (12-8, 1-3), who now trail conference-leading Merced by three games. COS has won or shared the past three conference titles.
The Giants were led by Alaysia Reed (Las Vegas), who delivered 16 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists.
Serena Ybarra (Coalinga) had 14 points and six rebounds, Elyssa Brumfield (Golden Valley-Bakersfield) had eight points and 10 rebounds, while Neli Diaz (McFarland) and Sapphire Jones (Hanford) each added six points for COS.
The Giants are idle on Jan. 23.
COS returns to action at 3 p.m. Jan. 25 at Porterville, the first of four straight road games.
The Giants also play Jan. 29 at West Hills-Lemoore, Feb. 1 at Taft and Feb. 5 at Fresno before returning to Porter Field House to host Merced at 3 p.m. Feb. 8.
